>> track-by-track, No Strings Attached <<
(the official second album (though actually the third) -- sold one million copies its first day)

album overall: ***½ [3.5 stars]
1. "Bye Bye Bye" **
This song really is good, it's just that it's everywhere and I burned out on it quickly. The background music is my favorite part of this one, really. Justin's vocals tend to grate on my nerves every now and then, and do so in BBB. I like Justin, really I do, and think he's really talented, it's just that thing he does sometimes.. hard to explain.

2. "It's Gonna Be Me" ***
"It's Gonna Be Me" is one of *NSYNC's best songs live, therefore, the album version falls short now. I need the "one two three to the four.." or it's not the same. There's an "It's Gonna Be Me" remixes CD out that I highly recommend (especially the Jazzy Jim mix).

3. "Space Cowboy (Yippie-Yi-Yay)" ****
Yes! Love this one! And live?? wow. It's just an awesome song, and one of the most catchy ever. I find myself in public going "why yi yi yippie yi yay yippie yi yo yippie yi yay.." at least once a month (now I know how JC felt in the airport).

4. "Just Got Paid" ****
In the 80s, when this was a Johnny Kemp song (minus the rap that Justin and Chris wrote and performed here), I loved it, too. My favorite thing, other than Chris doing the second half of the rap, has got to be how clearly Lance's voice is heard. He actually sings the entire song underneath the main harmonies -- very cool. Anyone who doubts Lance's importance *coughCarsonDalycough* needs to hear this.

5. "It Makes Me ill" ****
This song always makes me think of my friends in college, because they were impressed I could sing this one the same speed it was performed in.. ha ha. What they didn't realize is, it's only because I've listened to it so many times. Great song. That's all.

6. "This I Promise You" ***** +
*drool* One of the best songs of all time, by anyone. The main way I choose favorite songs is by breaking it down: would it work a cappella? would it be good as just lyrics on a page? would it be good as an instrumental? If all three are yes, it will most likely become a favorite song of mine. This I Promise you passed that test with flying colors.

Beyond all that, Richard Marx has been one of my musical heroes (and favorite artists) since I was 8 years old, and he wrote it. It's just a fantastic song -- the vocals are perfect, the instrumentation is beautiful (thanks to Richard's production and playing), and it's great to sing along with. My favorite parts are the bridge (the "over and over I fall.." section) and the guitar solo (which radio edits out - stupid, stupid, stupid).

7. "No Strings Attached" *****
Ever since the episode of "The Simpsons" (my favorite show) that *NSYNC were on, I've loved this song. In case you didn't see it.. this was sort of used as their theme song whenever they appeared on screen. Also, the way it is done live made me appreciate it more.

8. "Digital Get Down" ***
OK, I admit it - this song has grown on me. I wish Chris would have sung some of it, and maybe a few spoken words from Lance? Other than that, it's cool. As with most, I like is best live (especially on the Madison Square Garden concert).

9. "Bringin Da Noise" ****
I've liked this one better ever since July 21, 2001. I don't know why this happened, but I sang it backstage and on the elevator (with two of Dante Thomas' dancers, and some other people, listening) like an idiot while going to and from the Soundcheck Party. I'm a moron, what can I say? Good times. Good times.

10. "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" **
Really, I have no good reason to dislike this song, it just does not appeal to me. Diane Warren has been one of my favorite songwriters for years, plus, hello, it's by *NSYNC, and it's a touching song. I have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. At times, I love it. It's strange how that works. Overall, though, it gets a two.

11. "I'll Be Good For You" *****
Most of you know I love the song because of this. I just adore everything about it: music, vocals, lyrics, everything. Also, the band director, Kevin Antunes co-wrote it (with Justin), which is a cool thing to me. That man is very talented.

12. "I Thought She Knew" ****
By most accounts, this was the first song the guys ever sang together, and it shows.. I mean, they sound like they were born to sing this. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT a cover, it was written for *NSYNC by Robin Wiley, their musical director (who also did the a cappella arrangement of "O, Holy Night"). For those who haven't heard it, this one is a cappella, too.
