>> track-by-track, Home For Christmas <<
(the second album, although most people don't count it as such)
album overall: ****½ [4.5 stars]
(it's my favorite *NSYNC album)
1. "Home for Christmas" ****
The intro is kind of mismatched to the rest of the song, which is basically the only thing I could find wrong with this song. The lyrics make me feel really badly for the guys; for those who haven't heard it, it's basically about being out on the road and missing out on the holidays at home - but being determined to make it there for Christmas. With the addition of a Gospel choir, this really puts you in the Holiday frame of mind - even in July.
2. "Under My Tree" ***
There's just something kind of disturbing about this song. I mean, it has sort of a sensual feel to it, then the lyrics "I wish Santa could be here to see..." are added. It just doesn't fit. I think it's an attempt to make it more family-friendly, but it doesn't quite accomplish that, it just comes off as creepy. However, the vocals are flawless, which is why it gets three stars.
3. "I Never Knew the Meaning of Christmas" ****
This song sounds like it could be about Jesus Himself, but "I wished on a star, and girl here you are" kind of takes care of that idea... ha ha. The point of it would work in either case, however. It says that Christmas is not about gifts and all the bells and whistles, and that nothing really feels right until you have the right people around you. "I was lost in the dark, 'til you opened my heart, like an angel shining bright" is my favorite line. Beautiful arrangement, great vocals, touching lyrics.. just a great song.
4. "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" ***
There isn't a thing wrong with this song, I've just heard it too much, because it was a single, a video, performed on TV a lot, etc. Pure burnout, that's all. The song is really nice. Good message too, especially the line that says, "No matter what your holiday, it's a time to celebrate. Put your worries aside, and open up your mind..." By the way, did you know there's an *NSYNC Christmas tree ornament that plays about 20 seconds of this song? I didn't either, until I got it from my brother about a year ago.
5. "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" ****
This is a classic, of course - and *NSYNC did a great job. However, and no offense to Justin, but I think it would've been better if the entire song was done by JC, or possibly JC and Joey. It's good as is, though, very well done, guys!
6. "I Guess It's Christmas Time" *****
I can't say enough good things about this song! Chris and JC singing leads the entire song.. who could ask for more? The lyrics are absolutely amazing, really a timeless, touching song. "Voices of angels open our hearts so we can open our arms. And we'll all join hands to celebrate the goodness that shines inside of everyone. I must've been a part of some grand design. Guess it's Christmas time."
7. "All I Want Is You This Christmas" ****½
This song is simply adorable. Very good message here, too, and the vocals, again, are impressive. This features of my favorite Justin vocals, and, as always, JC sounds perfect. ;)
8. "The First Noel" ***
This is great, but compared to the rest of the album, it gets three stars. Good song, just not up to par here.
9. "In Love On Christmas" *
I'm sorry, but the intro?? Yes. Strange. The entire song is just odd. It's a shame it's on here, because otherwise, this album could be listened to straight through. I have to skip this one nearly every time, I just can't handle it. The harmonies are great -- and that's all.
10. "It's Christmas" ***
JOEY SOLO! Hey, hey! How about that? Come on, people, Joey has a cool voice, why is it so rare to hear it? At any rate, it's nice here.. as is Mr. Chris, who is actually featured on this CD quite a bit (hmm, maybe that's why I love this album so much, you think?).
11. "O, Holy Night (A Cappella)" ***** (and more!)
This is the BEST!!! "O, Holy Night" is my favorite Christmas song, and I adore a cappella, so right there, you have me. This is the song that made me a die-hard *NSYNC fan. I'll make a long story semi-short here: I love to hear everyone's version of "O(h), Holy Night," and when I noticed the guys did an a cappella version, I grabbed the album (before I owned the debut album, this is). I fell so in love with it, that I listened to the rest of the CD.. and I loved it. The next time I went out, I grabbed the debut to catch up on what I'd been missing. So, there ya have it. This is on a very short list of hoilday tracks I'll listen to all year. Fantastic!
12. "Love's in Our Hearts on Christmas Day" ****
OK, this mainly gets so many because I am obsessed with the sound of cellos, and there is a great string section featured here. Also, everyone sounds so amazing! Wow, love this song!
13. "The Only Gift" *****
Everyone (yes, even Lance) gets a solo part, the message is great, the harmony is tight. It's really, really, nice. When December rolls around, this is one of the things I most look forward to hearing (because I try not to listen to holiday music all year).
14. "Kiss Me at Midnight" ***
There aren't all that many songs about New Year's Eve (well, compared to the amount of Christmas songs), but this is a potential classic. It has a really fun party vibe to it. Very *NSYNC.
